These are
true stories from some of the people who settled here. People whose courage
and fears, humor and hardships helped shape who we Minnesotans are today.
These are not the stories of governors, business leaders, or other popular
figures whose achievements and mishaps are chronicled in history books,
newspapers and other scholarly publications and official documents of the times. These are the stories of
lumberjacks, soldiers, homemakers, farmers--ordinary people who left us their
life stories in the form of letters, diaries and photographs. They knew how
good and how brutal the good old days were--they lived them.
