Made in China: Fine Art From the Middle Kingdom to Minnesota

A new tpt series explores Chinese art history through the world-renowned collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Made in China: Fine Art From the Middle Kingdom to Minnesota takes viewers inside the Twin Cities museum to see some of the world’s most extraordinary examples of Chinese art.

The program also visits China to delve into the cultural context from which the museum’s cherished possessions originated. Each episode of Made in China features insights from Minneapolis Institute of Arts Curator of Asian Art Robert Jacobsen. The series also provides views of art from vantage points that are unavailable anywhere else. "This art is beautiful," confirms series producer Michael Trosman. "And a lot of people can’t get close enough to see its full brilliance. That’s one way television really helps out. We can get great closeup shots, which really make the objects come to life."

In China, tpt crews visited locations such as an early Bronze Age archeological site. These kinds of resources are becoming increasingly scarce, Trosman notes. "Many of these original archeological sites have kind of been paved over and turned into tourist attractions," he explains, "so the integrity of the sites has been compromised." The result of tpt’s travels is a fascinating series that will provide a keen understanding of the art and history of the Middle Kingdom, and also enhance the experience of anyone who has visited the China galleries at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

The program was a perfect way for Trosman to combine his years of television experience with his degree in Chinese language and literature. "I was hoping for years to combine the two specialties," he says. "I feel very fortunate to be able to work on this."
