"Thinking back over my life, it seems to me that there are different ways of looking out and trying to understand the world around us. Theres a very clear scientific window. And it does enable us to understand an awful lot about what's out there. There's another window through which the wise men, the holy men, the masters of the different religions look as they try to understand the meaning in the world. My own preference is the window of the mystic." Jane Goodall in JANE GOODALL: REASON FOR HOPE
Narrated by Harrison Ford and filmed on location in Tanzania, England, Paris, and San Francisco, JANE GOODALL: REASON FOR HOPE looks beyond Goodalls scientific career at the woman herself her remarkable life and the deeply held spiritual beliefs that have been at the center of her life and work. Structured as a biography, the film traces Goodalls prescient childhood in England where her earliest companion was a toy chimpanzee named "Jubilee" to her decades with the wild chimps at Gombe, to her "conversion" from scientist to environmental activist in the 1980s." REASON FOR HOPE brings together the many experiences that have graced and shaped Jane Goodalls outlook on life," said Catherine Allan, executive producer of the film. "What is less known is how her scientific studies have been inspired by her deepest moral and spiritual beliefs."Goodalls beliefs have led her today, at age 65, to a new career campaigning tirelessly literally living out of a suitcase on behalf of reforestation, improved conditions for captive chimps, and Roots & Shoots, her international environmental and humanitarian program for youth. Goodall created Roots & Shoots, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute, to foster respect for all living creatures and to help young people learn how to improve their communities. "It's an honor to be part of this wonderful film about Jane Goodall," said Harrison Ford, who brings his talent and support for Goodall's work to the documentary as its narrator. "Jane is one of the most remarkable women of our time, whose work on behalf of the environment is inspiring a whole new generation. "Bobby McFerrins African-inflected music is featured throughout the film, performed by McFerrin and acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. "It conveys the beauty and awe of nature with the same kind of simple, moving elegance that makes Jane Goodalls message so powerful," said producer Emily Goldberg. JANE GOODALL: REASON FOR HOPE is produced by Twin Cities Public Television. Emily Goldberg is producer/director; Catherine Allan is executive producer; Phillip Berman is co-executive producer; and Gerry Richman is executive-in-charge of production.
